RM Auctions

1965 Aston Martin DB5 lot # 155 sold for $2,090,000.  In #3 condition with paint issues that did not show up in the brochure, this car did not sell on the merits of its condition.  This is one of several cars that were built for filming and promotional purposes of the James Bond movies.  I believe Ian Fleming's character, agent 007 drove a DB5 in Thunderball and Goldfinger, hence the golden "accessory" in the foreground.  Since the paint is no longer original someone ought to strip it to bare metal and do a proper paint job.  Not presently fitted with the flip-top shift knob concealing the button for the ejector seat(I checked).

Above are photos of lots 130 & 131, 1960 Mercedes 220SE coupe and cabriolet with consecutive serial numbers.  These are number 1 condition cars that went through frame off restorations with no regard to expense.  The coupe sold for $121,000 and the cabriolet for $203,000.  From the Dr. Phil Lutfy collection.  (My photos don't really do justice for these cars.)

I didn't follow this car, I just like the engine detailing and components on its correct Ford Flathead V8.  It is a breath of fresh air compared to all of the Chevrolet 350 engine'd hotrod kits complete with power steering and tilt wheel.

Barrett-Jackson

1971 280SE 3.5 cabriolet lot # 447 sold for $76,680.  A nice #3 plus car.  The auction description said that besides tires and new top it is "original as delivered".  It was locked up when I came by so I was unable to scrutinize the jams but I suspect it has received a recent relatively high quality paint job.  VIN: 11102712003101

1959 Mercedes 190SL lot #1520 sold for $45,360.  An uninspiring #3 level "driver".  The description on the car says it was restored by British restoration shop and it shows.  The description goes on to say, "It shows just a bit of hazing on a few engine parts".  I would call this a bit of understatement.  The seller should be happy by about $10,000.  The hood(or "bonnet" since a British shop did this car) should be black on the underside.  VIN: 1210421000116

1958 Devin SS lot #1227 sold for $129,600.  283 Chevrolet engine.  Implied to be one of the "factory" Devin race cars.  Bill Devin was the driving force behind Devin Enterprises.  Chassis # S71531

1973 Mercedes 450SL lot #25 Sold for $21,600.  A #3 plus car with 86k miles.  The 107 chassis cars will be following the W113 cars up the price ladder.  Get yours now.  Look for an extremely nice '72 or '73 450SL or a low mile original 560SL.  Current prices will seem cheap 10 years from now.  That is dust all over the interior, roll your windows up at B-J.  VIN: 10704412012119

1978 Porsche 911SC Lot #1519 sold for $26,460.  This 86k mile, condition #2 car looks to have been painted one time and is mostly stock(the hood is ajar).  I couldn't see the seats due to the tight sheepskin seat covers but the owner reported that they were fine. This is a big price for a 911SC.  The presentation was great and the reported concours wins may have helped achieve this price.  Being a coupe rather than the more common Targa helped also.    VIN: 9118201304

Barrett-Jackson has become a "no reserve" only auction.  I wonder why this very rare Hudson truck has a for sale sign on it?

I didn't follow this Alfa......but I like it.

1950 Ford F1 lot # 421.1 sold for $31,320.  It is described as an AACA National Champion and the "best of show" stock F-100 at the Super Nationals of 2004.  It is a nice old truck that someone has spent a lot of time and money on but really only deserves a condition rating of #3+.  Maybe it was the only stock F-100 at the Super Nationals! (Actually 1/2 ton Ford trucks from '48 through '50 were called F1, the F100 designation came later.)  It is here because my "parts runner" shop truck is a '50 F2.  It isn't shiny like this one.  I also have a '48 Meadow Green F2 that will be for sale soon.

Russo and Steele

Dr. Lufty sold the following cars at Russo and Steele in addition to his pair of 220SE's at RM Auctions:

1968 Mercedes 280SL lot# S259 for $50,050.  This is a Medium Red/Parchment #3+ car.

1968 Mercedes 280SL lot# F257 for $33,275.  This is a White #3 driver.
Sorry for no photos.

I hope you enjoyed this little report.
